In June 2014 the FDA approved Restylane Silk, the newest extension to the Restylane family. Restylane Silk is a clear injectable gel filler used for softening lip lines and improving lip texture. Restylane Silk restores youthful lips and treats lines and wrinkles around the mouth. It can also treat "bar code" or fine lines on the upper lip without enlarging the lips.
The gel is composed of hyaluronic acid which is naturally found in the body. It is non-animal based and contains zero animal protein, so allergy pre-testing is not necessary. Restylane Silk contains 0.3% lidocaine, used to reduce discomfort for patients when treated. Drs. Weiss were primary investigators in the clinical trial that lead to approval of Restylane Silk. They have been using it since November 2014 and have accumulated extensive experience using this form of Restylane for the lips.
In a clinical study, 98% of patients reported improvement in their lip fullness 14 days after injection and 76% of them had noticeable lip improvement 6 months after their injection. Adverse reactions reported were mild and included lip swelling, short term pain, or bruising.
Restylane Silk® and Restylane Lyft® are safe and natural cosmetic dermal fillers that restore volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial (nose to mouth) folds. They can be used in other areas of the face as well to: restore lips, correct lip lines, restore cheeks, soften jowls, and can even help improve sagging.* Restylane Silk® was the first FDA-approved cosmetic dermal filler made of non-animal-based hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that already exists in the human body and is used to provide volume and fullness to the skin. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane Silk® is a crystal-clear gel called NASHA, or Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid. NASHA is biodegradable and completely biocompatible with human hyaluronic acid. Restylane Lyft® is a larger version of the same molecule suitable for correction of deeper defects.
